Joshua Tree Art Gallery

Joshua Tree Art Gallery

Joshua Tree Art Gallery presents Mexico and Guatemala: A Journey, 1981-2021, a series of life paintings by Paul Donaldson. These paintings are a selection of work spanning roughly forty years when Donaldson traveled extensively to Mexico and Central America - observing, photographing, and sketching studies for future paintings and drawings. Donaldson`s primary artistic style is naturalism, a true-to-life approach that represents the subject matter with the least possible distortion or interpretation. In the scenes he has selected to recreate, Donaldson focuses on the routine of his subjects, portrayed in everyday moments by capturing the light, colors and realness of the local environment. The early works, starting in 1981, are primarily painted on location, and the later works are pieced together from photos and drawings in his Yucca Valley studio. The Mexican paintings are the result of many brief visits to Mexico. The Guatemala paintings resulted from a weeklong tour with wife Bonnie to Mayan villages around Lake Atitlan to visit textile artisans.
